Story of a Cosmetologist

Being a hairstylist is something I have literally always wanted.

Like most little girls, I LOVED my dolls and Barbies.
At one point, just about all my Barbies received a makeover from me. And by makeover, I mean butch-cut.

When I was about ten years old I started a little business.
I made a list of services; manicures, pedicures, foot rubs, and hair brushing.
Next to the service I listed the price [pretty sure I charged nothing more than a dollar].
Along with the service menu was a separate piece of paper for "appointments".
I attached both pieces of paper to a clipboard, then went around the house advertising my business.

My little sister Stephanie and her friends were my guinea pigs.
I did their hair as often as they would let me.

When I finished high school, beauty school was still on my mind but I felt a lot of pressure to get a college degree.
So I signed up for a few classes at a community college.
I hated it. Something just felt off and I wasn't excited about the direction my life was going.
After a very stressful day of classes, I called my mom and basically told her that I wanted to go to beauty school.
Mom and dad were extremely supportive.
Dad and I made a trip to Utah to tour a few schools.
Within about 5 minutes of touring Paul Mitchell in Provo, I knew it was exactly where I wanted to be.

Only a couple months later, I moved to Provo and started my schooling.
I made friends instantly. The classes were exciting and kept my attention.
I was making my dreams come true.

20 months later, I finished school and became a licensed cosmetologist.

There are a lot of cosmetologists in Provo, which made finding a job in a salon very difficult.
Really, I just wanted to work from home. But in order to do so I needed a bigger clientele, which takes time to build.
So I tried to keep busy at home doing hair for my close friends and some family members.

I continued to build my clientele at home while I was working at Great Clips for 1 1/2 years.
Working in a salon was very stressful. But no doubt, the experiences and lessons I learned are so valuable to me.

Currently I am working from my home [kitchen] and continuing to build my clientele.
I designed and ordered business cards, and bought a barber chair to complete my set-up.
With new things constantly evolving in the beauty industry, there will always be more to learn.
I'm so grateful for the experiences thus far that have given me confidence in my skills as a hairdresser.
Interacting with people, giving them a new look, whether it be drastic or subtle,
then seeing their satisfaction and new self confidence is so insanely rewarding.
I feel blessed to be able to say that I truly love what I do.
