Moving day was not a typical moving day for us. And we are thankful!
Kellogg's so graciously takes care of all the moving expenses and labor. So that means WE didn't have to pack or move our things. All we had to do was schedule a time for the movers to come.
Jay's work start date is June 2nd. Our original plan was to move to Michigan around May 20th so we could have time to get settled into our new home before Jay went off to work.
Unfortunately things don't always go as planned... Our apartment wasn't going to be available until May 30th. It was a bummer at first but we just thought, it's OK, we will just have some extra time in Utah, no big deal. Then while scheduling a time for the movers to come, they informed us that it would take anywhere from three to fourteen business days to drive our things to Michigan. Basically we decided that we didn't want to cut it close, we wanted to make sure our things got to Michigan by our move-in date. It was Wednesday May 7th when we were getting all this sorted out. If we wanted to insure that our things we would be in Michigan before moving into our new home, the movers would have to come on Monday May 12th. That was so soon! We thought we still had two more weeks in Utah but suddenly it was down to just a few days!
Jay tirelessly spent the next few days making phone calls and getting things all worked out with the hotels, movers, and shipping our car. It was busy and chaotic but everything worked out just fine.
The movers came on Monday. We plan to stay at a hotel in Provo until the end of the week, then fly out to Michigan on Saturday the 17th, and then stay in another hotel until the 30th.
We were told ahead of time that the movers would literally pack everything for us and anything we packed ourselves wouldn't be insured. It was pretty wonderful that all we had to do that day was pack suitcases full of clothes and toiletries to get us through the next three weeks. Once that was done, we sat and waited for the movers.
The movers came and instructed us to take everything off the walls, then they quickly got to work. Because our place is so small, there wasn't really a space for Jay and I to just hang out and watch them pack. Jay sat in his car and took some work calls, and I just sat outside chatting on the phone with my sisters. Luckily Tiff and Nate had no problem with us hanging out upstairs for the rest of the day. Jay and I did go downstairs occasionally to check up on the movers. It was kind of nerve racking having a bunch of strangers handling all of our things! And they were an interesting group of men with tats,
piercings and gnarly smoker breath. But they were very kind and got the
job done in four hours- that's packing AND loading our things into the
truck. Pretty impressive.
The movers left, then we did some cleaning with the help of sweet little five-year-old Addy.
Just before driving to our hotel, we took a few more minutes to walk around the apartment. Suddenly it felt as though the last four years went by way too quickly. This was our first home. We will never have a first home again and therefore, this place will always have a very special place in our hearts.
After checking into the hotel we came back to the Johnson's. We ate dinner, played games, and ate ice cream. Then we said goodnight and instead of going back downstairs as we would normally do after dinner with the Johnson's, we drove away to our hotel.
