This year my birthday landed on a Thursday, so I requested that we spread it out through the weekend. Jay wasn't able to take the whole day off but he did manage to finish with work by the afternoon. He surprised me with a heartfelt card, some sweets from Continental, and Super Mario Brothers Wii game! (Just recently the topic of Mario came up in a conversation and I told Jay that was the one Nintendo game I loved as a kid.) Then he told me to take some money and go shopping. He's the best!
After picking up Panera for dinner, I vented to Jay about how annoyed I was that Panera doesn't sell root beer. He suggested we pick one up at McDonald's just down the road. I said, "No, no, it's not worth an extra stop, I'll be satisfied with my salad." He insisted, "Nope. It's your birthday! We're gettin' that root beer!" Turns out that particular McDonald's doesn't sell root beer either. Jay was still insistent that we weren't going home until I had my root beer. So we made another stop at a gas station. Thankfully the gas station was fully stocked with root beer, but if you were going to use a card to pay you had to spend a minimum of $4. Because we didn't have any cash, I grabbed two more sodas which put us just over $4. We don't get out quite as much as we used to, so this was quite an adventure.
We enjoyed our food and root beer at home before a walk to the park. Nothing beats September evenings in Michigan. And nothing beats being with my sweet family. A couple days later I was spoiled again with a meal at one of our favorite restaurants: Thai Cuisine. I couldn't have asked for a better birthday.
