A Visit From Rich & Renee | Independence Day 2015

When we weren't out and about eating delicious food and exploring our town, we were home eating ice cream and watching Parks and Recreation. [Seriously we watched at least one whole season within four days. I think Rich and Renee are now hooked.] Their visit went by way too fast but Jay and I enjoyed every second with them. And Evelyn loved bonding with grandma and grandpa.

Griffin Grill & Pub | July 3rd

Renee made a delicious cobbler with the blackberries behind our house.

Battle Creek Balloon Festival | July 3rd

Lake Michigan | July 4th

After having lunch at Continental, we drove down to Silver Beach in Saint Joseph. Needless to say the streets and the beach were JAM packed, but we were lucky enough to find free parking a few blocks away from Silver Beach. We strolled through the town then down to the beach, then basically dipped our feet in the water and walked right back to the car. It would have been nice to stay longer but there wasn't any place for us to sit on the beach and the boys were anxious to buy more fireworks. So we drove back home, ate hot dogs, watched the hot air balloons from the balloon festival land near our street, then joined the rest of the neighborhood in shooting off fireworks. [It's illegal to shoot off your own fireworks in California, so Rich was pretty much in heaven.]

Kellogg Forest | July 5th

We thought a relaxing stroll through Kellogg Forest would be the perfect way to spend our Sunday afternoon. We thought wrong. It was hot and mosquitoes were everywhere. Half way through the 2 1/2 mile loop we realized our mistake. Basically the only way out was through, so we booked it through the second half of the loop swatting mosquitoes left and right. Thankfully I was able to keep Evelyn completely covered and she didn't end up with a single bite. Jay and I both drenched ourselves in bug repellent beforehand but Jay ended up with a few bites on his face and arms. And the bugs went right through my shirt leaving me with 23 just on my back! I don't think we will be returning to Kellogg Forest anytime soon.

Sweetwater's Donut Mill & Gilmore Car Museum | July 6th

Sweetwater's is a big hit in Michigan. I personally don't understand it because I don't really love donuts, but we couldn't deprive Rich and Renee of the full Michigan experience.
After our little treat we drove to Hickory Corners to see the Gilmore Car Museum and dine at George & Sally's Diner, which is an authentic 1941 diner that was moved to Michigan from Connecticut.
